Niall Hammond has over 20 years experience of working in built and cultural heritage within the broader envelope of sustainability, environment and economic regeneration. He was previously the County Archaeologist for Durham where he had responsibility for archaeological planning advice and the development of heritage databases; and the former senior advisor to the Ministry of Defence where he advised on historic buildings, archaeology, landscapes and World Heritage Sites. In particular he led on the MOD’s UK wide Buildings at Risk programme and various projects looking at the sustainable re-use and upgrading of historic buildings. During the current reviews of heritage legislation in England and Scotland he has been the MOD’s principal advisor.
His past work has been varied and has provided him with a wide range of experience including the recruitment, development and management of functional teams, budgetary & business planning, development of heritage attractions, and tourism initiatives and educational provision. He also has a successful track record in bidding for grant aid (HLF, European Regional Development Fund, LEADER, Museum grants, ESA & Stewardship). He is a strong believer in a multi-disciplinary, integrated approach to management, working with other disciplines to promote sustainable, heritage led change and development.
