Field walking
This is the most basic form of on-site investigation. It involves a team of archaeologist systematically covering an area and collecting and recording surface finds of pottery, flint, bone etc. This information is then plotted, analysed and collated. The resulting distribution pattern can indicate the potential survival of sub-surface archaeology. This is a rapid and relatively low cost form of evaluation and may be requested in the early stages of larger infrastructure.
