Test Pitting

Small pits usually measuring 1m or 2m square, are dug either in locations determined by other forms of prospecting (fieldwalking or geophysical survey) or in a regular grid pattern. The contents of these pits are sieved to ensure the retrieval of all archaeological material. This form of investigation is not used to identify features but to gauge the distribution and concentration of material across a given area; in this way it is akin to fieldwalking. This type of exploration is often requested for sites where a possible prehistoric element has been identified or to evaluate sedimentary and other types of archaeo-environmental evidence across a large area.
