National Monument Record (NMR)
The National Monuments Record is English Heritage's public archive. Similar to the HER but on a country wide basis, it holds details of a quarter of a million archaeological monuments and excavations in England, as well as thousands of plans, drawings and reports. It is also a repository for over seven million photographs, including aerial coverage. Based in Swindon, a remote search request of the NMR is a requirement of a DBA and can take a few days to complete. A cost for this service is charged by English Heritage and is included in fixed price tenders.
A similar record exists for Scotland and is curated by the Royal Commission on the Historic and Ancient Monuments of Scotland based in Edinburgh. This is also accessible to the public by appointment.
