Statement of Significance (SoS)
A statement of significance may be requested as a stand alone document or, more usually, as part of a larger study. The purpose of a SoS is to establish what it is which makes a site special and to assess whether that importance is at risk or vulnerable to future change. Significance may be judged on a broad basis, according to whether a site is of national, regional or local importance, or it may be done on a more detailed, site specific criteria. A SoS may be requested by the local planning authority in assessing a development application, but they more commonly form part of a Conservation Management Plan or assessment.
