Strategic Research

A series of national and regional policy documents from the DCMS ‘family’ have begun to make explicit links between the historic environment sector and economic and social as well as cultural agendas.  Improving the quality of life, by allowing people to feel a greater sense of ownership of and engagement with the places in which they live, work and play, is an important theme of recent strategies. We can carry out research which will help influence the poltical agenda so that it recognises the value of the historic environment and its wider contribution towards our economy and culture. This can take the form of research into the value of heritage, such as our collaboration with Arups to create a report on the value of heritage in the north east of England, or research into other current heritage issues such as the skills gap in traditional crafts and the implications this has for the maintenance of the nation's 4.41 million historic homes.
