Balliol College Farm Historic Building Survey
Client: NAA for Yuill Homes
Archaeo-Environment Ltd were commissioned to undertake an historic buildings survey of a 19th century farm at Longbenton, North Tyneside in support of a planning application for a new development.
Formerly owned by Balliol College, Oxford, the existing complex was an interesting example of a mid to late 19th century farm. It incorporated a number of the advances in farm design and agricultural production technologies. Built primarily for intensified beef production, the layout of the farm was governed by the need to provide extensive space to house cattle. The aim was to minimise movement and weight loss and maximise the collection of manure for fertilising the fields.
A full photographic, written and metric survey of the site was undertaken with the aim of understanding the development and archaeological significance of the farm complex. Based on this, coupled with additional documentary research, the proposed demolition of the farm complex and farmhouse was successfully mitigated by the production the buildings report and the accompanying archive.
The deadline for this project was extremely tight given the timetable of planning meetings but Archaeo-Environment drove through the work and a successful planning application was subsequently granted.
