Historic Settlement Patterns in Weardale
Crawleyside
The landscape around Crawleyside is renowned for its prehistoric cairns and the sacred site at Heathery Burn Cave. However the modern settlement of Crawleyside probably owes its origins to the medieval route from Stanhope to the common gazing grounds up a winding and demanding path. This route may have attracted settlers by the wayside but no evidence of early settlement has been found. Industrial activity in the 1830s encouraged growth, but most building took place between 1860 and 1880. By the end of the 19th century settlement had stagnated.
