Historic Settlement Patterns in Weardale
Client: The Weardale Society.

Archaeo-Environment were commissioned by the Weardale Society to carry out rapid architectural surveys of six villages in Weardale, County Durham. The purpose of the project was understand more of the built tradition and historic character of these communities with the aim of using this material to inform future planning decisions. Covered by the project were: Wearhead, Westgate, Eastgate, Edmundbyers, Frosterley and Crawleyside. Information from a wide variety of sources was drawn together in order to build a picture of how each settlement evolved.

The reports are divided into two parts; the first part examines the historic settlement pattern of each village and offers advice on future research initiatives for the Weardale Society and other interested groups. The second part provides advice to potential developers, the local planning authority and homeowners on the means to protect and enhance the historic character of each village and thus retain its sense of local distinctiveness.To read a summary of each report, select one and click.
