Based on the results of a desk-based assessment the local planning authority may request additional on-site evaluation to be undertaken to see whether the predicted archaeology does exist on a site and the extent and condition of any remains. The results of the evaluation process are used directly in assessing your planning application and will determine any subsequent archaeological conditions placed upon your scheme. This might involve more extensive excavation ‘to preserve by record’ the archaeology on the site, although more commonly it will entail a series of measures to avoid or minimise the impact of construction on any surviving remains. Such ‘mitigation by design’ can save you the lengthy delays and the escalating costs of mounting a full-scale archaeological excavation. Evaluation can also protect you from any nasty surprises and delays further down the line should unexpected remains be encountered during development.
