Britain’s heavy industry has been a major influence on our economy, landscape and society for the last 250 years, particularly here in the North. It has shaped the distribution of our towns and villages, the layout of our roads and transport systems, the growth of schools and co-operatives and other social institutions, and the rationalisation of farms and agriculture.
Both local and national directives are now highlighting the importance of regeneration in former industrial areas making the archaeology of these sites a key planning concern. Despite often being seen as ‘recent’ they are still subject to Planning Policy Guidance (15 and 16) but, by their nature, former industrial complexes are very different from more standard archaeological sites. In many cases a substantial built element will survive, as well as below ground deposits. Specialist knowledge of industrial processes is required to identify and understand each element in order to provide appropriate mitigation. There may also be issues of contamination and other ecological factors which need to be taken into consideration. Archaeo-Envrionment Ltd have considerable experience in dealing with industrial and ‘brownfield’ sites and can offer a range of services whatever the size or scope of your project
We have also been involved in a number of local projects which have focused on promoting the importance of our industrial heritage and preserving the communities which grew up around it.
